Here are some fun facts I bet you didn't know about bicycles:

  1. In 1817, Karl von Drais, a German baron, invented a horseless carriage that would help him get around faster. The two-wheeled, pedal-less device was propelled by pushing your feet against the ground, The machine became known as the “draisine,” and led to the creation of the modern-day bicycle.
  2. The term “bicycle” was not introduced until the 1860s, when it was coined in France to describe a new kind of two-wheeler with a mechanical drive. Before that they were typically called ‘velocipedes’
  3. About 100 million bicycles are manufactured worldwide each year more than double the amount of cars.
  4. The Tour de France is one of the most famous bicycle races in the world. Established in 1903, it is considered to be the biggest test of endurance out of all sports. Held over three weeks, the annually changing route goes through the Pyrenees and Alps before finishing in Paris.
  5. Cycling three hours or 30 kilometers per week halves your risk of heart disease and strokes.
  6. To get efficient use of their pedaling, cyclists use a high gear when going downhill, a medium gear on flat surfaces and a low gear when going uphill.
  7. Want to look ten years younger? Cycle regularly. If you cycle on a daily basis, you’ll be as fit as a person ten years your junior.
  8. A lot of famous motor engineers, including Henry Ford and the Wright brothers, kicked off their remarkable careers by producing bicycles.
  9. The fastest anybody has ever gone on a bicycle is 152.2 miles per hour. This record was set by American Olympic Cyclist John Howard in 1985.
  10. The Netherlands has more bicycle users than any other country with about 99% of the population owning and travelling by bicycle.
  11. On a bicycle you can travel 3 times faster than you can walk, for the same amount of energy.

Reducing Poverty Through The Power Of The Bike

1/16/2015

Earlier this week I found out that I was a contestant for the Face of Kenya USA 2015. A project founded by Janet Wainaina in 2012. The project aims to promote cultural diplomacy, youth empowerment, community cohesion, charitable initiatives and progressive branding of Kenyan products. What makes this pageant different from all the rest is that every contestant gets to pick a charity of their choice that they would like to support.

My charity of choice is the Safari Simbaz Cycling Trust. It aims to unearth hidden talent and develop world class athletes within underprivileged children in disadvantaged communities around Nairobi. They also provide supporting structures for formal and informal education. They help build sustainable communities by creating alternative career paths like being a tour guide, bike mechanic and even a professional cyclist.

The Safari Simbaz Cycling Trust is the brainchild of David Kinjah who is Kenya’s most successful cyclist. He was the captain of the Kenyan cycling team in 2006 commonwealth games. He has also competed professionally in Australia, Europe and South Africa. He is famous for training and discovering Chris Froome who won the 100th Tour de France in Mont Ventoux 2013.

The Safari Simbaz base is Kinjah’s private residence, a structure made from corrugated iron sheets with basic facilities. The base is located on the outskirts of Kikuyu about 15Km from Nairobi city. It functions as a workshop, training facility and houses some of his riders.

David Kinjah has used his wages, winnings and corporate sponsorship deals to support, train, feed, cloth and house numerous impoverished and underprivileged boys. He has for the past 20 years dedicated his life to the sport of cycling and has continued to hold the belief that the bike is the answer to reducing poverty in Kenya.

Your generous donations will go to the following:
  • A donation of $50 will feed a rider for one week.
  • A donation of $100 will help buy spare parts for the bikes.
  • A donation of $500 will help buy a junior mountain bike.
  • A donation of $1,000 will help buy a road bike.
  • A donation of $20,000 will help build an elite training facility.

"You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you." John Bunya
