AMBASSADOR MARIE OJIAMBO

11/22/2015

I am a doctor of Pharmacy by training, currently residing in New York. I hold a degree in Pharmacy from the University of Nairobi and currently pursuing a Masters degree in Industrial Pharmacy at St. Johns University in Queens, New York.

Why I love Kenya:
Aside from the great weather, obvious beauty and picturesque nature of my country Kenya, I find pride and joy in calling it my home because of the rich culture, warm, friendly countrymen and vast opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship and advancement that present themselves to the young generation within the country as well as venture capitalists and multi national companies from around the world.
Our country boasts cutting edge investment opportunities and advancements in education, business, IT and medicine. The capital city, Nairobi is a thriving environment for young technopreneurs and has recently gained the title “Silicon Savannah”.  Kenya, which is geographically viewed as the commercial gateway to Sub Saharan Africa, has relatively good political stability, is one of the largest growing economies and is home to a highly educated and youthful workforce making it an oasis of opportunities.

Charity of choice:
Sickle Strong Initiative, Kenya. www.sicklestronginitiative.com

Birthed in the year 2013, I founded the Sickle Strong Initiative. Many sickle cell warriors and their family members reached out to me after the inception of SSI. They needed help, they needed encouragement, they needed a person to talk to, an advocate and a home to belong to. These needs I felt would be best addressed through an organization whose mandate was to advocate for better health care opportunities for Sickle Cell Warriors in Kenya.

Through SSI and the help of an extremely talented team of individuals, I have been able to host medical training and awareness campaigns for the Sickle Cell Disease Community in Kenya. I also birthed the annual public awareness event, Ongea! It is a platform for sickle cell warriors to speak out about their condition, share and interact. It provides an opportunity for the warriors to engage with and challenge the government, pharmaceutical industry, insurance companies, stakeholders and the public on what they are doing to improve the health care and environment that sickle cell warriors in Kenya are exposed to. My initiative hosted the second edition of Ongea on June 20th, 2015 at the Safaricom Michael Joseph Centre in Kenya.
SSI continues to search for better opportunities to advance the health and well being of sickle cell warriors in Kenya.

Why I joined the pageant:
FoK, USA provides a prestigious platform to its contestants. I felt that this platform would benefit me by presenting an opportunity to raise awareness around Sickle Cell Disease and to also raise funds to advance my pursuit of better health care for sickle cell warriors in Kenya through the Charity, Sickle Strong Initiative.
