  • Greetings everyone , My name is Michelle Laura Apondi, aka Mimi. I am 18 years of age. I graduated from high school in May of this year. Most of the beneficiaries get overjoyed when they get the books and are able to flip them, usually for the first time. I believe that, "Let's read" is the best gift for a child. It enables them to learn a lot about the world they live in and beyond. Even though most of the world has gone digital and most people   now rely on laptops and cellphone to get information, these children have no access to the Internet due to lack of electricity and wifi. They depend on the daylight to read while in school, or during the weekends. Hence, books are still very much needed.

Most of the books are donated by well wishers. Academic excellence also use the money from donations to purchase some. Since most of the donations come from the US,the organization has a great challenge in shipping the books to Kenya, because the cost of shipping is very high. The first benefitiary is Maraba school, but we intend to extend the gesture to nearby schools and counties within the country.

Academic excellence also hopes to create a reading culture to the adult community. It's our belief that they can benefit from reading various articles and thus improve their living standards. For instance, they can learn about various methods of farming to improve their farms and get good produce which will in turn help improve their income, and living standards.

Academic excellence also intends to provide comprehensive early childhood development by offering training that will help young upcoming students to work/ teach in education sector. This will create much needed employment to the youth. The students are not likely to drop out of school when they realize that there's hope of getting employment after college.

AMBASSADOR FoKUSA 2017 ( MIMI ) Michelle Laura Apondi My name is Michelle Laura  aka Mimi. I am 18 years of age. I graduated from high school in May of this year. I currently work at a grocery store, but I plan to join college with the intention od studying  scrub Tech or Radiology.

My parents are from Kenya, hence I consider it my second home. I love Kenya with a passion. It has a beautiful climate, rich culture, beautiful scenery and the wildlife are gteat attraction to tourists from all over the world.

Though I currently live in Tampa, Florida, with my family, I look foward to going back to Kenya to give back to the community. Most of the children lack important learning resources such as books. There's an organization that is working towards assisting the needy children back home to achieve this great need. It's known as Academic excellence. Ihopee.org  mission is Through Academic excellence  a  platform that I cherish because it assists the needy children to get reading materials, and other learning equipment. It's main goal is to ensure that no child is left behind when it comes to learning.
