Collins Mokua is a 20-yr old Junior at Columbia University in the City of New York, studying Neuroscience and Behaviour on the Pre-Medical track. Born in Nairobi and raised in Kisii, Collins moved to Dallas, TX at the age of 12 and has retained his strong love and passion to serve his country Kenya. He recognizes the potential that Kenyans both at home and in the diaspora have to be phenomenal and catalyze positive change. In this regard, his future goals are aimed at directly benefiting the people of Kenya through improving the quality of and access to healthcare. To this end, he has taken steps to give directly back to Kenya during his time at Columbia University. In the summer of 2018 he worked on an oral health promotion project in Nairobi, under the supervision of Dr. Kavita Ahluwalia, sponsored by the Program for Global and Population Health and the Laidlaw Scholars Program. The following summer, he returned to Nairobi, this time working at the Africa Mental Health Research and Training Foundation. His work investigated the long term care systems, interventions for intimate partner violence, and dementia care policy available in Kenya. Collins is also passionate about empowering and uplifting the youth of Kenya. He has been a guest speaker at several events including the 2019 Equity Bank Limited African Leaders Program held at Brookhouse Schools where he shared his high school to college journey with Kenya’s brightest high school students who are gearing up to start their own college journeys. His passion for education is why Collins is working to support SustainHope Inc. SustainHope Inc has served young girls in the Kenyan community for the past two years by sponsoring high achieving girls from disadvantaged backgrounds living in Kenya attain high school education. The Sustain Hope Girls Scholarship was established to recognize and support outstanding students who have excelled in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Examination and demonstrate financial need. There is more work to be done and with the help of Face of Kenya, he hopes to see more girls be supported to attain the education that is their right.
