FOKUSA INTERACTS WITH KENYA OLYMPIC TEAM

8/5/2015

  • As my parents were sitting watching the 5 o'clock news, they were surprised to here that our home town" Bakersfield" was hosting a Special Olympic team from Kenya in our local university CSUB. They immediately made a decision to go and meet them. It was late in the evening when they saw them and the sad news was that he could not treat them for nyama choma because it was their last day in Bakersfield. However, my dad, Face of Kenya USA manager Wacu Ndirangu and I, decided to meet them at UCLA where they were residing until the games are over. It was a wonderful experience to meet the athletes. They were humbled and ready to show their talents to the world. We talked a lot about Kenya, their trip to America and a little bit of compare and contrast between both countries.
  • Kenya Special Olympics team won 22 gold medals, 2 Silver and 13 Bronze.
  •  I want to thank the director Mr. John Makathimo and his team for letting us interact and take wonderful pictures. I would love to meet them during my visit to Kenya.

Who is Trina Njoroge?

Hello,

My name is Trina Wambui Njoroge. I was born and raised in Bakersfield California;  I'm currently a freshman in college pursuing a degree in Biology, hoping to become a teacher of the subject in the future. Being a Kenyan American, and having studied in Kenya for one year at Mt. Kenya Academy, I have followed and observed the Kenyan culture closely and that has kept me connected to my roots.
Besides regular classes, I have always been interested in fashion, beauty and pageantry. In high school, I did multiple pageantries and learned a lot about confidence, public speaking, and charity organizations. During these occasions, I won Miss Teen 'Peoples Choice Award’, ‘Most Photogenic’, and 'Second Runner Up'. When I heard about the FACE of Kenya USA pageant contest, I saw a perfect opportunity for me to give back to the country my parents and I love dearly.
As our Kenyan anthem says and I quote," May we dwell in unity, peace and liberty plenty be found within our borders" I always pray that we achieve and maintain peace and liberty and find ways and means to fight hunger and poverty in the country.  When I travel to Kenya or go to Kenyan gatherings here in the U.S, I see love, compassion, unity, and generosity; qualities that stands out no matter where Kenyans are gathered.  Growing up in the United States, I've always felt a need to do something meaningful in our country ‘Kenya” and I think I have just found the way do that. Thank you to Face of Kenya USA.
My Charity is known as “Angels Forgotten”. The name is striking and makes one to  wonder who these angels are;  Angels Forgotten are children that became orphaned as a result of AIDS epidemic in Kenya, and many other parts of Africa. As a result of witnessing this catastrophe first hand, the founders saw an immediate need to save as many children as they could. In 2009, they registered the non-profit organization “angelsforgotteninc.” and opened the Angles Forgotten Children Center. Since then, the charity has been feeding these angels, educating them and also meeting their healthcare needs. The founders have worked tirelessly as more and more children are discovered and getting under the umbrella of Angels Forgotten. I have chosen this organization to keep the fire burning and bring hope to these children. The charity’s project is located in Elburgon, Nakuru County, in Kenya and their website is http://angelsforgotteninc.org.

I've been to Kenya multiple times and I've always felt myself at home. I even attended Mt. Kenya Academy in Nyeri for one year. Just as our Kenyan anthem says and I quote," May we dwell i n unity, peace and liberty plenty be found with our borders" I always pray that we achieve and maintain Peace and Liberty and find ways and means to fight hunger in the country.
